From Manhattan to te Yucatan Peninsula.11 - 18 March

From Manhattan to the Yucatan Peninsula

Epic weekend in NYC
Aeromexico delivered us safely, although somewhat shakily into Cancun; what has been described as the centre of boobs, botox and bikinis. We avoided the crowds of testosterone fuelled, legging wearing Spring breakers and headed south to Playa del Carmen. We knew we werent in real Mexico yet when we had the luxury of flushing toilet paper and the pain of paying $5 for a pina colada (which may I say I practically inhaled, it was the best darn drink Ive had in my life). We soaked up the cigars, tequilla (a tip to all, when ordering a margarita, ask the bar tender what tequilla they use as this guarantees a shot on the house to warm the cockles). After an epic week in New York City with Katie and Shay, the carribean was the perfect place to rest and recuperate.

Serenade of the only Spanish song we knew - PARA BAILAR LA BAMBA!!
It was only 20 degrees and the heat was definitely coming from the freshly grilled jalapeño in my mouth

Hotel numero uno - Playa del Carmen. Beautiful bright family run hotel
The next stop on our Central American adventure was obviously a truck stop town, smelling slightly of petrol and cigarettes, and full of partying 18 year olds on spring break - Tulum. The town itself didnt have much to offer, although the food was amazing, the beer was cheap and the local market was pumping! A great vibe at the market. The first few hours of the party bus playing global hits such as, Gangnam style, All the single ladies and the like was entertaining, but after several hours and by 3 in the morning the novelty had worn off. In saying that, we had an incredible day yesterday exploring the ruins of Tulum and sunbathing with the locals at one of the most beautiful beaches weve been to. They say that Tulum is the best beach in Mexico, and they say that for good reason. White sand, turquoise blue water, coral reef and ruins that go right into the ocean, and a group of 4 beautifully sculpted men - with what we soon found out were with one fat photographer. They then began to jump on each others backs and pose for photographs. It all looked a bit too friendly to me! Julien was sufficiently entertained by their female counterparts...

Ruins at Tulum - this was a former Mayan temple

Tulum was absolutely stunning on the beach. Were now in Valladolid which is further inland and an old colonial town. Pastel colours, centotes (limestone swimming holes), mayan ruins and Jen is in heaven taking photos. Particular favourites are shutters and doors, there are some amazing buildings here. Off for a big cycle adventure tomorrow, so more photos of this incredible part of the world to come in the next few days.
